Fine Art Print: The Diamond Ring 12 x 12 gallery-wrapped print, astronomy art, wooden stretcher bar, gallery print, colored pencil art
"The Diamond Ring" is a 12" x 12" art print based on one of my coloured pencil originals that began as a commission. It is mounted on a 3/8" wooden stretcher bar and is gallery-wrapped, meaning the image also bleeds onto the sides. This is the type of mounting used in high-end museums and galleries all around the world. This includes the Certificate of Authenticity.
This print was from a commission in which the client wanted a trompe l'oeil effect, so instead of having it matted, I painted both the mat and the frame into the painting, so what you're seeing isn't separate frame and mat, it is part of the original painting.
I originally painted this image from my own reference photo taken from my own telescope during the total solar eclipse that swept across the United States on August 21, 2017. I was the only Astrophysics student allowed onto the field with physicists, astrophysicists, and astronauts. It was our job to collect and send data back to NASA for the CATE project, a very unique project in which ordinary citizens connect to NASA's databases and send data directly to them for study. Our mission that day was to study and capture the photosphere so NASA could study it even further, since due to its nature of being overshadowed by the sun's luminosity, is the least-studied and known part of the sun.
I also was honoured to have served as the science advisor for national radio and had the privilege of giving live commentary as the eclipse happened. It was my first total solar eclipse, and by the time totality was over and I handed back over the mic to the regular on-air personality there with me, my knees literally buckled under the emotion and I wept. It was something so awe-inspiring and special that I will always endeavour to view another one in my lifetime.
The name of the painting is based on the phenomenon that happens twice during a total solar eclipse: once when the Moon is just about to fully cover the disk of the Sun, and again just as the Moon begins to move off the face of the Sun. The instantaneous flash of sunlight looks exactly like a Diamond Ring. It got its name from Albert Einstein.
The blue around the disk is due to chromatic aberration in the lenses of the telescope.
